It begins with years of noticing—the architecture I've aoday'sdmired, the places I've traveled, the remarkable people I've met, and the curiosity that has shaped the way I see the world. WHY YOU'LL REACH FOR IT

A chunky black chain felt like the missing piece in my collection of essential necklaces. Then I went searching for just the right black enamel carabiner to connect the chain to the charms. Of course, once I found it, delicate charms were never going to do. I chose substantial shapes that could hold their own against the chain and complete what I like to think of as bold with tailored style. Voilà—an everyday black necklace with considerably more personality than I originally imagined.

• Fossil Coral, deep Citrine Drusy, and a Sunstone spear seemed destined to live together. I loved the balance of their different colors, textures, and shapes gathered on one substantial black enamel carabiner.
• I staggered the three charms in both size and length. That gave each one its own little moment rather than allowing any one gemstone to steal the show.
• Even the lobster clasp became part of the design. I chose black enamel to continue the clean line of the chain without introducing another metal or color.
• I chose a 20-inch length with layering in mind. It lets the charms fall just below a shorter necklace, where that bold cluster can have a little breathing room.
