WHY YOU'LL REACH FOR IT

I've always been drawn to Peacock Pearls—not only for their luminous colors, but for the almost metallic finish I see when I look closely at them. They remind me of a beautiful old patina, the kind you find on ancient metal doors, vintage lamps, and centuries-old door handles. There's something about that timeworn richness that I find irresistible.

• The hand-knotted Peacock Pearls are really the stars here. Look closely and you'll discover plum, deep rose, and flashes of metallic color that seem to shift as the light changes.
• I chose the 17-inch length with layering in mind. I can picture delicate strands sitting just above it and something chunkier falling below, with the 2-inch extender giving you room to find just the right balance.
• I love taking something classic and giving it an unexpected twist. Pearls are timeless, but these moody, almost metallic colors give them an entirely different personality.
• Even the closure deserved a little attention. The lobster clasp is wonderfully easy to use, while the unusual extender chain adds one more distinctive detail to the design.
